How to juggle being a small business owner AND a mom?

In short Q&A style, we asked Daphne, owner of Daphne's Botanicals, how she balances being a full-time mom and running several small businesses in Portland, Oregon!

How do you juggle motherhood and being a business owner?

To be honest, it's stressful especially since we are trying to grow two businesses. I have a young child so there's not much mental space or availability to work after school lets out in the afternoons.

But on the bright side, in some ways it pushes me to have boundaries that I probably otherwise would not give myself.

I also prioritize family time on the weekend and have an absolutely fabulous team that I rely on to keep moving things forward while I'm with my husband and child.

I also love that my kiddo sees me working hard; he really does like to help out where he can, watering plants, doing errands, and packaging PlantDoc for orders. He also loves people so he's a friendly greeter in the shop when he's there! My partner is also a huge help when his full-time work schedule allows it, and I'm grateful for that.

What are 3 of the MOST important things you want readers to know about Daphne's Botanicals?

Number one: Daphne's Botanicals is a Filipino/women-owned design + plant shop located in the SE Portland neighborhood of Woodstock.

On that note, we are so blessed to be attached to another Filipino/women-owned business, the bakery Shop Halo Halo. Together we are the "Botanical Bakeshop" where you can visit, grab a treat, and shop for plants.

Last but not least, just this year we're spinning off PlantDoc, a wholesale business for our patent-pending fully biodegradable moisture meter for houseplants. We now have three new shapes!

What is special about Daphne's Botanicals?

I tell people we are not your average garden shop; we LOVE to help you choose your beautiful plant + pot combos and figure out what houseplants work best for your space, style, care level and budget.

How old is Daphne's Botanicals?

Daphne's Botanicals was started in 2020. We also spun out PlantDoc as s standalone business this year, though we launched the product in 2021 under Daphne's Botanicals. We launched 3 new PlantDoc shapes in August!
